SOMEBODY LET HIM BUILD A SPACESHIP!!
Meryl Streep on working with Chris and Liam Hemsworth
When she’s right, she’s right.
Saved! (2004) - dir. Brian Dannelly
As far as teen movies go, Saved! offers enough satirical wit to please even the most disdainful moviegoer. When Mary (Jena Malone) finds out her boyfriend might be gay, she receives a peculiar message from Jesus (the hispanic pool boy) that she must give up her virginity in order to convert him back away from his sinning ways… but then she gets pregnant and is left alone after her boyfriend’s parents discover some gay porn magazines under his bed. Already, Dannelly has set the film up with enough momentum to propel it to the finish, tacking on the mega-bitchy (and mega-Christian) Hilary Faye (Mandy Moore) as the antagonist is just gravy.
The film follows the typical teen movie format, starting with some new kids coming to school, one girl falling out of popularity and into the “outcasts” (Eva Amurri, Macaulay Culkin and Patrick Fugit), and naturally somehow finding a way to end the whole shebang at the senior prom. Still, Saved! stands out amongst most teen films, but was overshadowed in 2004 by Tina Fey’s Mean Girls.
